Medical director supervision

Liquid rhinoplasty is done under the supervision of a medical director. I'm the licensed RN doing the injection, and I follow physician-directed protocols. My medical director has 23 years of practice and about 12 years in aesthetics. You can look up my license on the North Carolina Board of Nursing site.

What it can and can't do

Filler adds; it can't take away. It can smooth a small bump by building up around it, or lift a tip that sits a little low. It can't make a nose smaller, fix breathing, or replace surgery for bigger changes. If what you want needs a surgeon, I'll tell you.

The label status

The FDA's dermal filler page lists the nose among the areas where it recommends against filler injection, and says those uses are not approved by the FDA. So liquid rhinoplasty is an off-label use. I'd rather you hear that from me than find out later.

The risk I want you to understand

The FDA calls filler getting into a blood vessel the most concerning risk of dermal fillers. The chance is low, but it can cause tissue death, vision problems including blindness, or stroke.

The nose is one of the areas where that risk gets the most attention. My post on vascular occlusion goes through the FDA's 2015 safety communication and expert consensus on where it's reported, the warning signs, and how it's treated.

HA filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. I keep it on hand and have a written emergency protocol for a blocked vessel. I'll confirm which filler I'd use for your nose at the consult.

What I do to lower the risk

  • Small amounts, placed slowly with low pressure, which is what the FDA tells injectors to do.
  • Stopping right away at any sign of a problem.
  • Building gradually and checking at two weeks instead of doing it all at once.

Warning signs after you leave

Get care right away for unusual pain, any change in your vision, skin near the injection that turns white, gray, or blue, or any sign of a stroke. After hours, call or text (704) 584-9785. In an emergency, call 911.

Cost

Liquid rhinoplasty is on my pricing page with dermal fillers: per syringe, quoted at consult. You get a specific number at your free consult.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel pressure and some pinches. Some fillers contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine.

Downtime

Some swelling and a possible bruise for a few days. Most people go back to their day after the visit.

How long it lasts

The FDA says how long a filler lasts depends on the filler material and where it's injected, and that absorbable fillers break down over time, so the treatment may need repeating.

Your first visit

I look at your nose from the front and side and ask what bothers you. Then I tell you whether filler can do it, what the risks are for you, and the price. If the answer is no, I'll say so.
