Medical director supervision

Each session in the plan is done under the supervision of a medical director. I'm the licensed RN doing the injection, and I follow physician-directed protocols. My medical director has 23 years of practice and about 12 years in aesthetics. You can look up my license on the North Carolina Board of Nursing site.

The timeline, in plain terms

The FDA describes PLLA as given in a series of injections over a period of several months, with effects that become more apparent over several weeks. In practice that means:

  1. A free consult, where we decide whether Sculptra fits and how many sessions I'd expect.
  2. Your first session.
  3. A wait while your body responds. Nothing dramatic happens overnight.
  4. Further sessions spaced out, if your plan calls for them.
  5. A look back once things have built up, to decide whether you're done.

If there's a wedding or a big trip coming, tell me. Sculptra isn't the tool for a fixed date in a few weeks.

Not reversible

The FDA notes that fillers not made of materials such as hyaluronic acid can be difficult or impossible to remove. Put plainly, HA filler can be dissolved, and Sculptra can't.

Cost

Per session, quoted at consult, as listed on my pricing page. Because the plan is spread out, the cost is too. Financing through Cherry and CareCredit is available for treatment plans.

Pain

Most people feel pressure and a few pinches. Some fillers contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine. I'll tell you if yours does, and we'll talk through numbing at your consult.

Downtime

A few days of possible swelling and bruising after each session. Most people go back to work afterward.

How long it lasts

The FDA says PLLA effects may last up to 2 years. That's a general description of the material, and I won't promise a number for you.

Your first visit

We look at your face together and map the timeline above onto your calendar. You'll know the expected number of sessions and the price of each before booking.

Is it safe?

The FDA's page on dermal fillers lays out the risks. Going by that, hold off or bring it up at your consult if:

  • You're under 22. The FDA approves dermal fillers for adults 22 and older.
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. The FDA says filler safety is unknown during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Your skin is inflamed or infected where we'd treat, including active acne, a rash, or hives.
  • You have a bleeding disorder, severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis, or an allergy to lidocaine.
  • You tend to form keloids or raised scars.

Common side effects on the FDA's list are bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, and itching, and many clear up within days to weeks. The serious one is filler entering a blood vessel. The FDA calls that chance low, but it can cause tissue damage, vision problems including blindness, or stroke. If you notice unusual pain, any change in your vision, or skin near the injection site turning white, gray, or blue, get care right away.

Gradually. The FDA says PLLA effects generally become more apparent over several weeks.

Priced per session and quoted at a free consult.

No. It can't be dissolved the way HA filler can.
