Medical director supervision

Every under-eye treatment I do is under the supervision of a medical director. I'm the licensed RN doing the injection, following physician-directed protocols. My medical director has 23 years of practice and about 12 years in aesthetics. You can look up my license on the North Carolina Board of Nursing site.

Three reasons for a dark circle

People use "dark circles" for a few different things, and only one of them is a filler problem:

What it isWhat it looks likeCan filler help?
HollownessA dip between the lower lid and the cheek that catches shadowOften, if you are a candidate
Skin colorA brown or bluish tone in the skin itselfUsually not
PuffinessA bulge under the eye, often worse in the morningUsually not

Many people have more than one. I can't sort that out from a selfie, which is why the consult matters more here than for any other area.

How I check

I look at your under-eyes from the front and the side, in different light, and while you look up and down. Different light helps me tell a hollow apart from skin color or puffiness. If I think filler won't help, I tell you, and the consult costs you nothing.

Cost

Under-eye filler is priced per syringe and quoted at your free consult. The under-eye uses small amounts, but I'd be guessing if I quoted before seeing you. You get an exact number before anything is booked, and the pricing page explains how filler is priced. Financing through Cherry and CareCredit is available for treatment plans.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel pressure and a few pinches. Some fillers contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine, and we talk through numbing at your consult. I go slowly here, and you can ask me to stop any time.

How long it lasts

The FDA says how long a filler lasts depends on the filler material and where it's injected, and that absorbable fillers break down over time, so the treatment may need repeating. I won't give you a number of months. HA fillers are reversible.

Downtime

Swelling for a few days is normal, and bruising is possible because the skin here is thin. Most people go back to their day with a little concealer. Book at least two weeks before an event.

Your first visit

We talk about what bothers you, then I do the light check above. If filler is right, I place small, conservative amounts of HA filler, and the plan and price come first. Your included two-week follow-up is where we look at the settled result together.

Is under-eye filler safe?

Before you book anywhere, read the FDA's page on dermal fillers. These are the reasons I'd ask you to wait or talk it through first:

  • Under 22: the FDA approves dermal fillers for adults 22 and older.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding: the FDA says filler safety is unknown during both.
  • Acne, a rash, hives, or infection where we'd inject.
  • A bleeding disorder, severe allergies, past anaphylaxis, or a lidocaine allergy.
  • A history of keloids or raised scars.

The FDA lists bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, and itching as common dermal filler side effects and says many clear up within days to weeks. The most serious risk is filler getting into a blood vessel. The FDA calls that chance low, but it can cause tissue damage, vision problems including blindness, or stroke. Get care right away for unusual pain, any change in your vision, or skin near the injection site that turns white, gray, or blue.

Near the eyes, any change in vision is the warning sign to take most seriously.

What I can't tell you from a webpage

Whether your circles are hollowness, color, puffiness, or a mix. Sometimes the cheeks are the better first step, since lost volume there can deepen the hollow; see cheek filler in Cornelius. For the whole face, read facial balancing in Cornelius, or browse the services page.
